FIELDS OF STUDY

Drawing

professors: Petr Jochmann, Jan Krtička

Within the framework of Drawing, I attempt to introduce students to the traditional scope of themes, such as landscapes, nudes, still lifes. By the notation of that which we actually see—forms, outlines, surfaces and colours, through our sensory perception and experiences—we create a certain image. It is an attempt, which at the same time becomes a process of self-meditation, self-deliberation. We consider the relationships between pictured subjects. We feel something new, a special movement, that does something within us, everything takes on a new meaning, our view suddenly opens up into vast horizons so far undiscovered. It is not about imitating external reality, but about the mutual development of one’s own artistic expressive and communicative means. It can be the acquirement of the capability to break down shapes into various components and again put them together like puzzles, with the help of logical ordering of perceptions, which our brain, eye and hand, thanks to delicate perceptiveness, make possible. And that is something. There are almost unlimited opportunities of creating the foundation of deeper understanding of one’s own or others’ artistic work. At the same time there is also the point of view, which moulds a person; respectively, the way in which a person understands themself.
Instruction comprises lectures and seminars. A component of the theoretical part is an overview of the materials and techniques of drawing, instruction on perspective and composition, and a survey of the history of art aimed at presenting artistic works—works on paper by A. Dürer to contemporary artists. Students’ tasks in the practical area are to acquire and learn how to use perspective, the basics of composition, studying drawings—still lifes, portraits, the basics of figural drawing— and all evolving into individually-conceived free-style drawing. Searching for a personal theme is played out in various spheres, and is the starting point for one’s own process.
